Well, Alpena... Lady Budgetdown opened the staffing ledger.
And one number did not exactly whisper....
From 2014–15 to 2024–25, Alpena Public Schools' pupil count declined from 3,849 to 3,607.37.
That's 241.63 fewer pupils, down 6.3%.
Staffing FTE went the other direction.
🍎 Teachers:
171.21 → 182.35
+11.14 FTE (+6.5%)
📚 Paraprofessionals/Aides:
73.96 → 96.70
+22.74 FTE (+30.7%)
🏫 Non-Instructional/Support:
203.13 → 211.12
+7.99 FTE (+3.9%)
👔 Administrators:
17.80 → 27.00
+9.20 FTE (+51.7%)
Altogether, total staff FTE increased from 466.10 to 517.17, up 11.0% while enrollment declined 6.3%.
But that administrative line deserves its own little circle in the ledger:
Administrator FTE increased 51.7% while enrollment declined 6.3%.
That number doesn't tell us why the district's staffing structure changed. It does tell us what question comes next:
What changed over those ten years that resulted in 51.7% more administrative FTE serving fewer students?
No conclusions required.
Just a very large number wearing a very small name tag. 📜
Less students. More staff.
