Dearest Readers,
Our Grand Blanc review continues.
We have looked at ten years of finances. We have looked at staffing and enrollment.
Now, let us look at employee compensation.
Grand Blanc Community Schools' 2023 Total Compensation for W-2 Medicare Wages Greater Than $100,000 report identifies 23 positions with W-2 wages above $100,000.
Together, those 23 positions accounted for:
💰 Combined W-2 Wages: $2,683,215
🏛 Combined Total Compensation: $4,665,621
📊 Difference: $1,982,406
That works out to an average of:
$116,661.52 in W-2 wages
$202,853.09 in total compensation
And this is why Lady Budgetdown looks beyond the wage column.
Grand Blanc's report includes several employer-paid compensation components in addition to W-2 wages: Board Paid Annuity, Retirement and Stabilization, Insurance/In Lieu, FICA/Medicare and Workers Compensation Insurance.
At the top of the report:
🏛 Superintendent
W-2 Wages: $187,606
Total Compensation: $350,998
👥 Deputy Superintendent
W-2 Wages: $148,238
Total Compensation: $244,211

💡 Director of Innovative Programs
W-2 Wages: $114,848
Total Compensation: $210,075
The Superintendent provides perhaps the clearest example of why the additional columns matter.
In addition to $187,606 in W-2 wages, the district reports $20,900 in Board Paid Annuity, $110,659 in Retirement and Stabilization, $18,710 in Insurance/In Lieu, $12,654 in FICA/Medicare and $469 in Workers Compensation Insurance.
That brings the calculated total to $350,998.
Another interesting detail: of the 23 positions on this report, only two are explicitly identified as teachers, one middle-school teacher and one high-school teacher.
As always, Lady Budgetdown is not deciding whether any individual employee deserves his or her compensation.
That isn't the purpose.
The purpose is to take a public compensation report that most taxpayers may never encounter, put the numbers into a format that is easier to understand, and show the difference between what appears in the wage column and what the district reports toward the larger compensation picture.
The records provide the numbers.
You decide what you think of them.
With receipts and respect.
