Title: Pull Up A Chair

Dearest reader,

Not every conversation about Michigan schools needs to become a rabbit hole.

Sometimes we can simply talk about education.

Welcome to Michigan School Discussion, the broader conversation room in The Parlour.

This is where readers can start discussions about Michigan public schools, ISDs, school boards, budgets, bonds and millages, enrollment, staffing, teachers, governance, legislation, school finance, elections, facilities, transparency, or other education-related issues happening across the state.

If it affects Michigan schools and you'd like to talk about it, this is probably the place.

Discussion is the point

You don't need to arrive with a fully researched position.

You can ask what other people think.

You can share something happening in your community.

You can explain how your district handles an issue differently.

You can disagree with somebody.

You can even change your mind.

Imagine that. On the internet. 😂

What I hope we can build here is something increasingly difficult to find on social media: a place where people with different experiences and viewpoints can have an actual conversation about public education without immediately sorting everyone into opposing camps.

Keep claims and opinions separate

There's nothing wrong with having an opinion.

Just identify it as one.

If you're making a factual claim that is important to your argument, bringing the source is always appreciated.

And if somebody produces a record that contradicts something you've said, deal with the record rather than the person who posted it.

Receipts are welcome here too.

This isn't limited to one side of school issues

You can support a bond and discuss why.

You can oppose one and explain your concerns.

You can believe a district made a good decision.

You can believe leadership got something badly wrong.

You can advocate for teachers, question administrative spending, defend a school board decision, criticize one, or raise an issue nobody else has mentioned yet.

The expectation isn't agreement.

It's a conversation grounded in respect and, when we're talking about facts, evidence.

Where should your topic go?

If you have a specific question for me, use Ask Lady Budgetdown.

If you've found something you believe I should investigate, use Leads & Rabbit Holes.

If you're here to talk about Michigan education more broadly, you're already in the right room.

Michigan has hundreds of school districts and communities with very different challenges, resources, histories, and perspectives.

We might actually learn something from one another if we occasionally occupy the same room.

So pick a topic.

Pull up a chair.

And tell the Parlour what you think.

The floor is yours. 🪶
