Dearest Readers,
Today we turn our attention to Davison Community Schools (25140) for another look at what has changed over the past decade.
And Davison presents an interesting comparison.
From 2014–15 to 2024–25, Davison's pupil count declined only slightly, from 5,605 to 5,451.84, a decrease of 2.7%.
In other words, enrollment remained relatively stable.
The dollars, however, changed considerably.
💰 Total Funding per Pupil
$8,928 → $14,133
Up $5,205, or 58.3%
📚 Total Instruction per Pupil
$5,426 → $8,250
Up $2,824, or 52.1%
👥 Instructional Support per Pupil
$939 → $2,018
Up $1,079, or 114.9%
🏛 Business & Administration per Pupil
$1,068 → $1,658
Up $590, or 55.2%
🔧 Operations & Maintenance per Pupil
$791 → $1,446
Up $655, or 82.8%
And then there is average teacher salary.
👩🏫 Average Teacher Salary
$58,798 → $66,990
Up $8,192, or 13.9%
For context, cumulative inflation over this period was approximately 35.83%.
That means funding per pupil increased 22.5 percentage points faster than inflation, while instruction per pupil increased 16.2 points faster.
Instructional Support increased 79.1 points faster than inflation, and Operations & Maintenance increased 47.0 points faster.
Average teacher salary, meanwhile, increased 21.9 percentage points below inflation.
That contrast is worth noticing.
Over ten years, Davison served roughly the same number of students while substantially more money was available and spent per pupil. Some categories grew far faster than others.
The numbers don't tell us whether those increases were good, bad, necessary, or unnecessary.
They do give taxpayers a place to begin asking where the additional dollars went and what they received in return.
As always, Lady Budgetdown leaves that judgment to you.
With receipts and respect.
