Title: NOVI’S $60,000 SEPARATION INCENTIVE
Post by: Shadowninja on Sep 17, 2026, 08:52 PM
A READER ASKED A VERY GOOD QUESTION ABOUT NOVI'S $60,000 SEPARATION INCENTIVE.

Dear Readers,

Sometimes Lady Budgetdown opens the ledger. And sometimes you do.

A reader commenting on our earlier Novi post raised a question about the district's $60,000 voluntary separation incentive for eligible veteran educators that deserves a much larger audience:

Why structure the program in a way that could allow experienced teachers to leave after students have already entered their classrooms?

That's not just a financial question. It's a classroom question.

The voluntary separation program targets higher-pay-level employees and describes the eligible group as some of Novi's most veteran educators with significant institutional knowledge. The records we've reviewed indicate separations can extend into the beginning of the school year.

Think about the potential sequence.

A veteran teacher starts the year.

Students enter the classroom.

Relationships begin forming. Routines are established. Instruction gets underway.

And then that teacher leaves.

Now Novi potentially has to fill a classroom after the traditional summer hiring season, when the applicant pool may be smaller.

Does that happen in every case? No. And Lady Budgetdown isn't claiming that it will. But if the structure of the program makes it possible, asking how the district plans to prevent classroom disruption seems entirely reasonable.

And our reader raised another interesting idea:

Why not structure voluntary separations around retirement or resignation at the END of the school year?

If the goal is savings, that brings us to the other question Lady Budgetdown keeps coming back to:

WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL NET SAVINGS?

The incentive is $60,000.

But that's only one number in the equation.

How many participating educators will need to be replaced?

What will their replacements cost?

How many positions will remain vacant?

What recruitment and transition costs will result?

And after the incentive, replacement compensation and other costs are accounted for:

How much money does Novi actually save?

Those questions matter even more in the larger financial picture.

Novi's FY2025–26 General Fund budget projects approximately $106.10 million in revenue against $109.84 million in expenditures, a gap of roughly $3.73 million.

And as we showed earlier today, personnel already represents $89.56 million, or 85.91%, of Novi's General Fund expenditures.

So yes, reducing recurring personnel costs can produce savings.

But how those savings are achieved matters too. Especially when the people potentially leaving are experienced educators, and the people potentially experiencing the disruption are students.

Lady Budgetdown doesn't have the district's final net-savings calculation.

That's why we're asking.

How many educators are expected to participate?

How many will need to be replaced?

How many positions will remain unfilled?

When will those separations actually occur?

And what are the projected NET savings after everything is counted?

Those aren't attacks.

They're the questions taxpayers should be able to ask when millions of dollars, and classrooms are involved.

And credit where it's due:

This rabbit hole was opened by a reader.

Keep asking questions.

We'll keep following the numbers.

With receipts and respect.
