A FOLLOWER ASKED, SO I OPENED THE LEDGER...
A follower wanted to know how much Huron Valley Schools spent on attorneys. Fair question.
Fortunately, Huron Valley posts a detailed check register.
So I went looking.
For July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026, I found:
⚖️ Thrun Law Firm - $171,478.50
⚖️ Troutman Pepper - $100,756.41
⚖️ Miller Johnson - $71,373.00
⚖️ Clark Hill - $22,482.50
⚖️ Collins & Blaha - $172.50
Total paid to law firms: $366,262.91
But one number jumped off the page.
Of the $171,478.50 paid to Thrun Law Firm, $164,500 was a single payment coded "Other Bond Issuance Costs."
And Thrun wasn't the only firm whose payments weren't always labeled "Legal Services."
Some Troutman Pepper payments were coded "Other Professional/Tech Serv." One August check alone included $8,117.45 under that description. Which is exactly why I like check registers.
If I had searched only for expenses labeled "Legal Services," I would have gotten $135,121.20.
Following the actual law firms?
$366,262.91.
That's quite a difference.
So now I have a few questions for Huron Valley readers:
What was the $164,500 bond-related legal expense?
Is that a normal bond issuance expense for the district, or was something unusual happening in 2025–26?
And is there anything else in these numbers that Huron Valley residents think I should know?
I'm new to this ledger.
You live there. I just follow the numbers.
