THE OTHER SCHOOL BUDGET
Dearest reader,
When we talk about public education spending, we usually talk in millions.
Millions for operations.
Millions for administration.
Millions for facilities.
Millions for bonds.
But there is another school budget that rarely gets discussed.
The one sitting at the kitchen table.
A 2026 NerdWallet/Harris Poll survey found that back-to-school shoppers expected to spend an average of about $611 this year. Parents also reported spending hundreds more on things like teacher wish lists, school fundraisers, classroom requests and other school-related expenses.
More strikingly, 37% of parents surveyed said their child would likely miss at least one school activity because of cost.
And 51% said they felt overwhelmed by the financial requests coming from their child's school.
Those numbers are national, not Michigan-specific. But they raise a fair question.
When districts make decisions about fees, fundraising, activities, supplies and what gets shifted onto families, how often are we looking at the cumulative burden?
Because $20 here, $50 there, another fundraiser, another activity fee, another supply list, another "optional" contribution, eventually those numbers become a household budget issue.
Lady Budgetdown spends a great deal of time looking at what districts spend.
Perhaps we should also occasionally look at what families are being asked to spend.
With receipts and respect.
That would fit your page very naturally. And the graphic could be extremely simple: "THE OTHER SCHOOL BUDGET" with $611 + $531 underneath and a small line saying "What families pay beyond taxes."
