Lady Budgetdown: Marysville Public Schools: Step 5
We've followed the revenue. We've counted the staffing. We've looked at compensation. We've broken down the General Fund.
Now Lady B is opening the checkbook. 🪶🧾
Marysville Public Schools' 2024-25 Accounts Payable Check Register covers an entire fiscal year: July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
So I added the payments by vendor to see who received the most.
And here are Marysville's Top 5:
💰 MESSA — $3,082,346.18
🚌 Marysville School Bus — $970,866.90
🏫 RESA – St. Clair County — $533,217.14
⚡ Detroit Edison Co. — $517,304.30
💡 Great Lakes Power & Lighting — $476,665.00
Together?
$5,580,399.52.
That's approximately $5.58 million flowing through just five vendors during the fiscal year.
But this is also where context matters.
A big check is not automatically a suspicious check. 👀
These vendors represent some very ordinary, and very expensive, parts of operating a school district: employee benefits, transportation, educational services and utilities.
And that is precisely why I like looking at the check register.
A budget tells taxpayers where a district planned to spend its money.
The checkbook shows where the checks actually went.
Sometimes something interesting jumps off the page.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Either way, the receipts belong in the ledger. 👑

Receipts aren't very useful if we only keep the convenient ones.
With receipts & respect. 🪶
