MATTAWAN CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL: THREE YEARS IN THE LEDGER
We've followed Mattawan through the spending, staffing and compensation numbers.
Now we finish with the financial picture.
And this one deserves to be said plainly:
Mattawan appears financially stable.
Over three years, the General Fund balance grew:
2022–23: $7.10 million
2023–24: $8.05 million
2024–25: $9.30 million
That's an increase of approximately $2.21 million.
Even more interesting, Mattawan's final 2024–25 budget projected a $695,684 decrease in fund balance.
The actual result?
A $1.25 million increase.
Nearly $1.95 million better than budgeted.
There is also a lot of bond money moving through Mattawan's books. Voters authorized a $110 million bond program, with approximately $50.1 million in first-series proceeds received during 2024–25. Long-term debt consequently increased from approximately $85.4 million to $130.3 million.
That distinction matters.
Bond proceeds and bond debt make the district-wide balance sheet much larger, but they are not the same thing as Mattawan's day-to-day General Fund operations.
Looking ahead, the 2025–26 amended budget projects a modest $550,124 deficit. Even with that planned draw, Mattawan projects an $8.75 million ending General Fund balance — approximately 18.16% of expenditures and well above its 5% policy minimum.
And the latest audit?
Unmodified opinion. No material weakness or significant deficiency identified.
Sometimes following the money uncovers questions.
Sometimes it shows a district on reasonably solid financial footing.
The ledger gets to tell both stories.
👑 With receipts and respect.
