ANCHOR BAY SCHOOL DISTRICT: 10 YEARS IN THE NUMBERS
Lady Budgetdown has arrived in Anchor Bay, and as always, we begin with the same question:
What do the numbers actually show?
Using Michigan Department of Education Bulletin 1014 data, I compared Anchor Bay School District from 2014–15 to 2024–25.
Over those ten years:
🔻 Average pupil count: 6,187 → 5,337.67 (−13.7%)
🔺 All-sources funding per pupil: $8,846 → $15,438 (+74.5%)
🔺 Instruction: $36.03M → $45.58M (+26.5%)
🔺 Instructional Support: $4.48M → $8.92M (+99.2%)
🔺 Business & Administration: $5.18M → $8.43M (+62.7%)
🔺 Operations & Maintenance: $4.78M → $8.59M (+79.8%)
🔺 Average teacher salary: $70,419 → $73,849 (+4.9%)
For context, CPI-U increased approximately 35.83% over the same period.
That means Anchor Bay served about 849 fewer pupils, while all-sources funding per pupil increased 74.5%.
But the individual spending categories did not grow at the same rate.
Instruction increased 26.5%.
Instructional Support increased 99.2%.
Business & Administration increased 62.7%.
Operations & Maintenance increased 79.8%.
Average teacher salary increased 4.9%.
Those numbers don't answer every question, and Lady Budgetdown isn't going to pretend they do. They're the starting point.
Next, we'll start looking underneath them: budgets, audits, staffing and the other receipts that help explain where the money went and why.
