Dearest reader,
A breadcrumb from Lenawee County sent Lady Budgetdown wandering toward Onsted Community Schools.
And the ledger got interesting rather quickly. 👀📜
At the end of the 2022–23 fiscal year, Onsted Community Schools reported an audited General Fund balance of approximately:
$3.56 MILLION.
Fast forward to the district's 2025–26 budget, and the adopted fund balance was approximately:
$1.38 MILLION.
That's more than $2.1 million of financial cushion gone from the ledger.
But keep following the breadcrumbs.
By April 2026, the district was presenting financial scenarios showing its General Fund balance potentially falling even further — to approximately $753,000 under one projection, and as low as $339,000 under a more severe scenario.
That last number is a projection, not an audited year-end balance. Lady Budgetdown likes her receipts properly labeled.
And while the financial cushion was shrinking, something else happened.
Onsted determined that its existing administrative structure was "no longer financially sustainable."
The district eliminated six administrative positions.
Four administrators had their contracts nonrenewed.
Five newly configured administrative positions were created.
The district projected the restructuring would save approximately $280,000 annually.
And that brings Lady Budgetdown to the question sitting rather prominently beside the abacus.
If the problem was that Onsted's administrative structure had become financially unsustainable, why couldn't the structure simply be reorganized using the administrators the district already employed?
Why nonrenew existing administrators and bring different administrators into the newly restructured positions?
Perhaps there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Different qualifications. Different responsibilities. Different compensation. Different needs.
But when a district goes from a $3.56 million General Fund cushion to a point where it is modeling scenarios below $1 million, while simultaneously eliminating employees and restructuring administration in the name of financial sustainability, taxpayers are entitled to understand what changed.
So Lady Budgetdown has two questions for Onsted Community Schools:
Where did more than $2 million of General Fund cushion go in roughly three years?
And what did replacing administrators accomplish financially that restructuring the existing administrative team could not?
No accusations.
No conclusions.
Just two questions raised by the district's own financial records and its own restructuring decisions.
Perhaps Onsted can help fill in the ledger.
With receipts and respect. 📜
