Dearest reader,
Step 2 of our look at DeWitt Public Schools takes us away from the dollars for a moment and into staffing.
And this is where the decade gets interesting.
From 2014-15 to 2024-25, DeWitt's pupil count increased just 1.4% from 3,066 to 3,108.88 pupils.
Over that same period:
Teachers increased 17.2%, from 133.54 to 156.50 FTE.
Instructional aides fell 54.0%, from 10.47 to 4.82 FTE.
Instructional support increased 33.3%.
Guidance increased 25.5%.
School support increased 13.1%.
Student support doubled, increasing 100.8%.
And then we get to administration.
NCES data show total administrators increasing from 17.15 to 19.00 FTE, or 10.8%. But underneath that total is an interesting shift: school/building administrators declined 6.1%, while district-level administrators increased 38.5%, from 6.50 to 9.00 FTE.
Overall NCES staffing increased 16.0%, from 298.44 to 346.32 FTE.
So the decade looks something like this:
Pupils: +1.4%
Teachers: +17.2%
District administrators: +38.5%
Total staff: +16.0%
Instructional aides: −54.0%
Those numbers don't tell us whether each staffing decision was good, bad, necessary or unnecessary.
They do tell us where the district changed.
And that, dearest reader, gives us a few more breadcrumbs to follow. 👑
With receipts and respect.
