Dearest reader,
For Step 4 of our Roseville Community Schools review, I decided to follow a different set of receipts: the district's own list of association dues.
For the 2024-25 school year, Roseville reported spending $44,838.49 in district-paid association dues.
And where did that money go?
Among the larger payments:
Michigan Association of School Boards – Business Office: $8,050.29
Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals: $6,875.00
Michigan Elementary & Middle School Principal Association: $4,193.00
National School Boards Association: $4,165.00
Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators: $2,014.95
Michigan School Business Officials: $1,510.00
When I totaled only the organizations whose names clearly identify them as school board, administrator, principal, business-official or other management professional associations, I got $28,263.24.
That is approximately 63% of all association dues reported by the district.
A little clarification before anyone gets ahead of the ledger: this does not mean these memberships are improper. Professional associations can provide training, resources, advocacy, networking and other services.
But $44,838.49 is still taxpayer money, and taxpayers deserve to know where it goes.
And I deliberately did not toss every vaguely administrative-sounding organization into that 63% calculation. If the organization's name didn't clearly support the classification, I left it out.
No guessing. No padding the number. Just another little corner of the ledger that doesn't usually get much attention.
With receipts and respect. 🪶
