A reader asked a good question today about the nonresident students enrolling at Hemlock Public Schools:
How does that compare with the number of Hemlock resident students enrolled somewhere else?
So I pulled the other side of the ledger.
In 2022-23:
309 nonresident students enrolled IN Hemlock.
399 Hemlock resident students were enrolled ELSEWHERE.
In 2025-26:
412 nonresident students enrolled IN Hemlock.
361 Hemlock resident students are enrolled ELSEWHERE.
So what's driving the change?
Mostly, MORE NONRESIDENT STUDENTS ARE COMING IN.
Since 2022-23:
Nonresident students coming in: +103
Resident students enrolled elsewhere: −38
That's about 73% of the turnaround coming from increased nonresident enrollment, versus about 27% from fewer Hemlock resident students being enrolled elsewhere.
In other words, Hemlock's changing enrollment picture is being driven much more by attracting students from outside the district than by fewer resident students leaving.
A good question deserved a look at the other side of the ledger.
With receipts and respect.
