Dearest reader,
A reader sent Lady B a breadcrumb tonight. And this one is very interesting.
I spent part of my evening reading through a 63-page report concerning Haslett Public Schools, and one set of numbers made me stop.
In June 2025, district administrators held a multi-day administrative retreat in Grand Rapids.
The documented costs identified in the report include:
🏨 JW Marriott Grand Rapids - $13,387.54
📋 Larry Lobert & Associates, outside facilitator - $14,634.00
🍽 New Holland Brewing - $373.03
🍽 Littlebird - $119.64
🍽 Terra Bagel -$82.68
🍽 Luna Grand Rapids -$496.53
🍽 JW Marriott lunch -$151.20
🚗 Confirmed mileage reimbursement -$209.72
💰 Total identified: $30,073.64
Nearly $30,100 for one administrative retreat.
That is taxpayer money.
So Lady B has some pretty ordinary questions.
📌 How many administrators attended?
📌 How many hotel rooms did $13,387.54 purchase?
📌 How many nights?
📌 What was the agenda?
📌 And what exactly did taxpayers receive for the $14,634 outside facilitator bill?
Maybe Haslett has perfectly reasonable answers to every one of those questions.
But I think taxpayers should know the answers.
Because I spend a lot of time looking at school district spending, and when I see approximately $30,000 attached to a single administrative retreat, I'm going to stop and look at it.
Were Haslett taxpayers aware of this?
And perhaps the simplest question of all:
📍 What happened in Grand Rapids?
