Dearest reader,
The ledger has landed in Haslett Public Schools. 📖
As always, Step 1 starts in the same place: a 10-year look at MDE Bulletin 1014 data, comparing 2014–15 with 2024–25.
And Haslett gives us an interesting set of numbers.
📚 Pupil FTE
2,705.00 → 2,595.38
Down 109.62, or 4.05%.
Now follow the dollars.
💰 All Sources Revenue per pupil
$10,136 → $15,034
Up 48.32% nominally
Up 9.73% after inflation
🏫 Total Instruction per pupil
$5,760 → $8,324
Up 44.51% nominally
Up 6.91% after inflation
📖 Instructional Support per pupil
$1,430 → $2,546
Up 78.04% nominally
Up 31.72% after inflation
🏢 Business & Administration per pupil
$1,166 → $1,781
Up 52.74% nominally
Up 13.00% after inflation
🔧 Operations & Maintenance per pupil
$1,013 → $1,500
Up 48.08% nominally
Up 9.55% after inflation
📊 Total Support per pupil
$3,924 → $6,265
Up 59.66% nominally
Up 18.12% after inflation
And then there is teacher pay.
🍎 Average Teacher Salary
$58,080 → $60,184
That's an increase of just $2,104 over ten years, or 3.62% nominally.
After adjusting for inflation, that is a 23.34% decrease in purchasing power.
So over the same decade that pupil FTE declined 4.05%, revenue per pupil increased nearly 50%, instructional support per pupil increased 78%, and business and administration spending per pupil increased nearly 53%...
Average teacher salary increased just 3.62%.
Those numbers don't tell us everything about a school district.
But they certainly give us some breadcrumbs worth following. 🧐
And that is exactly what we are going to do.
