Dearest reader,
The Haslett Public Schools ledger is still open, and we have reached Step 2. 📖
Yesterday we looked at the dollars.
Today, we look at the people.
From 2014–15 to 2024–25, Haslett's pupil FTE declined from 2,705.00 to 2,595.38.
That's a decrease of 4.05%.
Over that same decade:
🍎 Teachers
125.60 FTE → 151.38 FTE
Up 20.53%
👩🏫 Instructional Aides
8.44 FTE → 9.50 FTE
Up 12.56%
📚 Instructional Support
2.00 FTE → 3.00 FTE
Up 50.00%
🧭 Guidance
5.00 FTE → 6.00 FTE
Up 20.00%
🏫 School Support
17.16 FTE → 20.04 FTE
Up 16.78%
🤝 Student Support
4.97 FTE → 5.72 FTE
Up 15.09%
📋 Other Support
63.74 FTE → 70.28 FTE
Up 10.26%
Then we get to administration.
🏢 LEA/District Administrators
8.50 FTE → 13.00 FTE
Up 52.94%
🏫 School Administrators
10.70 FTE → 7.00 FTE
Down 34.58%
Combined, total administrative FTE moved from 19.20 to 20.00 — an overall increase of 4.17%.
And total NCES staff?
304.25 FTE → 366.31 FTE
That's an increase of 62.06 FTE, or 20.40%, during a decade when pupil FTE declined 4.05%.
There are a couple of different stories inside these numbers.
Haslett added teachers. It added support staff. And overall administrative staffing changed relatively little.
But where those administrators were located changed considerably: district-level administrative FTE increased 52.94%, while school-level administrative FTE decreased 34.58%.
That is exactly why I don't like looking at one number by itself.
The ledger gets much more interesting when you follow where the numbers moved. 🧐
Onward to Step 3.
With receipts and respect,
