Title: HAZEL PARK: SUPERINTENDENT CONTRACTS
Post by: Shadowninja on Sep 30, 2026, 02:57 PM
Dearest reader,

A reader left Lady B an interesting breadcrumb about superintendent contracts.

Multi-year contracts can provide stability. Lady B understands the reasoning.

But stability has value.

So does flexibility. Especially when the money at risk belongs to taxpayers.

Some school boards repeatedly extend the back end of a superintendent's contract before the existing contract gets close to expiring.

That can leave taxpayers continuously exposed to several years of contractual obligations if circumstances change and a future board decides to go in another direction.

Hazel Park is a good example.

Earlier this year, its superintendent had roughly three years remaining on her contract. When the board considered ending that relationship, the estimated cost of buying out the remaining salary, benefits, retirement and vacation was approximately:

💰 $996,000

Nearly $1 million in potential taxpayer dollars.

The proposed March buyout did not ultimately occur, and Lady B is keeping the district's more recent September 28 agreement separate from this example.

This isn't about saying multi-year superintendent contracts are bad.

It's about asking whether boards need to continually extend them years before they expire, and understanding the taxpayer exposure created when they do.

So Lady B has a new breadcrumb for readers:

📜 Does your superintendent have a contract that keeps getting extended?

Send Lady B the contract or a link.

We may have another ledger to open.

With receipts and respect,
