LAKE ORION COMMUNITY SCHOOLS: $135 MILLION IN EXISTING BOND DEBT — AND ANOTHER $116 MILLION ON THE BALLOT
On November 3, voters in Lake Orion Community Schools will decide whether to authorize $115,985,000 in new school bonds.
But what does the district already owe?
📊 According to Michigan school debt records dated December 31, 2025:
💰 Outstanding bond debt: Approximately $134.97 million
💰 Outstanding state school bond loan debt: $0
That's an important distinction.
Lake Orion previously borrowed from Michigan's School Bond Loan Program to help make payments on its existing bonds. According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, the district paid off its remaining state loan balance in September 2025.
That doesn't mean the district is debt-free. It means the district no longer owes money through that particular state loan program.
🏫 WHAT'S ON THE BALLOT?
The proposed $115.985 million bond authorization would fund projects including school safety improvements, building renovations, instructional technology, buses, and facilities for special education and career-focused programs.
The ballot estimates an initial millage of 1.74 mills, with bonds issued over a period of up to 30 years.
And here's something else worth understanding: The $134.97 million represents outstanding bond debt as of December 2025. The proposed $115.985 million is NEW borrowing authorization, not money the district has already borrowed.
❓ With substantial existing bond obligations, how would this additional borrowing affect Lake Orion's future debt payments and property taxes?
That's a question worth asking before November 3.
