WHEN QUESTIONING A SCHOOL BOND BECOMES PERSONAL...
A Michigan family's experience has me wondering just how often something like this happens across our state.
Lady B has reviewed documentation concerning a family whose experience with their school district took a troubling turn after one spouse publicly questioned a school bond proposal.
📩 Multiple emails, complaints, and requests to meet were directed to the superintendent and members of the board of education. According to the correspondence reviewed, those communications received no response. The family reports that the district has remained silent to this day.
📂 Student records belonging to the family's children were accessed. And let's remember, student information systems can contain much more than grades and attendance. They may also include home addresses, parent and guardian information, emergency contacts, and other sensitive family details.
The family raised concerns about that access. Those concerns, according to the family, remain unanswered.
💬 The family also documented personal attacks and harassment following the public disagreement over the bond proposal, including conduct by district employees, teachers, administrators, board members, and elected officials.
I'm not sharing this to identify a district, accuse anyone of breaking the law, or make one family's experience the centerpiece of the conversation.
I'm sharing it because it raises a much bigger question.
❓ How often do Michigan parents and taxpayers experience personal attacks, harassment, or concerns about their family's treatment after publicly questioning a school bond, district spending, or administrative decisions?
Have you experienced something similar? Have you watched it happen to someone else?
I'd genuinely like to hear your experiences in the comments.
Because questioning how public money is spent should never mean giving up the right to ask questions without fear of personal repercussions.
