Dearest reader,

Lady Budgetdown was prepared to close the Lansing ledger for the evening.

And then she opened the district's 2025–26 Membership Dues disclosure.

Total membership dues reported by Lansing Public School District:
$98,879.07.

Much of the list contains precisely the sort of organizations one might expect to find, educational associations, professional organizations and school-related memberships.

And then the quill stopped.

🥂 COUNTRY CLUB LANSING
1 Membership — $1,750

🥂 UNIVERSITY CLUB OF MSU
1 Membership — $1,650

Combined: $3,400.

Now, before anyone races ahead of the receipts, Lady Budgetdown will not.

The district's disclosure does not tell us whose memberships these are.

It does not tell us who is authorized to use them.

And it does not explain what public or district purpose they serve.

It simply describes each one as:

"1 Membership."

Perhaps there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Lady Budgetdown would simply like to hear it.

Because when a public school district reports paying $1,750 for a country club membership and another $1,650 for a university club membership, asking what taxpayers received in return seems neither scandalous nor unreasonable.
It is called tending the ledger. 🪶

The receipt tells us what was paid.

Now, why?
