Dearest reader,

Bridgeport-Spaulding Community Schools is preparing to interview candidates for its next superintendent tomorrow.

The public reportedly received about 31 hours' notice.

And normally, I might chalk that up to a district meeting the legal notice requirement and move along.

But there's some important context here.

Bridgeport-Spaulding is currently being led by Interim Superintendent Dr. Desmon Daniel.

I checked his credentials again today through the Michigan Department of Education.

His School Administrator Certificate expired June 30, 2023.

He still does not have a valid administrator credential or permit listed.

And yet, he remains the district's Interim Superintendent.

Now, while the district is operating under those circumstances, the public gets roughly 31 hours' notice that interviews are being held for the person who could become its next permanent superintendent.

I'm not alleging an Open Meetings Act violation.

I'm asking about transparency.

Hiring a superintendent isn't a routine piece of district business. This is the person who could ultimately be responsible for leading the entire district.

Why wouldn't parents, teachers, staff and taxpayers be given more notice and a meaningful opportunity to follow the process?

There's a difference between giving the public the notice the law requires and making a genuine effort to keep the public informed.

31 hours.

For interviews for the district's next superintendent.

Bridgeport-Spaulding readers, did you know these interviews were happening?
