Dearest reader,

We have reached the final page of Lady B's Flat Rock Community Schools review.

Step 5 is where we look at the General Fund — where it stood at the end of the last audited year, and where the district's own budgets say it is headed.

Flat Rock ended FY2024-25 with an audited General Fund balance of $9,143,556.

That year, the General Fund declined by a relatively modest $65,810.

The next two years look different.

For FY2025-26, the district's final budget projects a $1,286,152 deficit and an ending fund balance of $7,857,406.

For FY2026-27, the original budget projects another $1,603,893 deficit, bringing the projected ending fund balance down to $6,253,513.

Put those numbers together, and Flat Rock is budgeting for its General Fund balance to decline by $2,890,043 from the audited June 2025 balance through the projected June 2027 balance.

That is approximately 31.6%.

There is important context here.

The district is not projecting that it will run out of fund balance. Its FY2026-27 budget still projects $6.25 million remaining, or 21.52%.

And the FY2025-26 and FY2026-27 figures are budgets — not audited results. Budgets can and do change as revenues and expenditures change throughout the year.

But budgets also tell us what a district expects when it adopts them.

In this case, Flat Rock is planning for two consecutive General Fund deficits totaling nearly $2.9 million.

That is where Lady B closes this ledger for now.

Five steps. Ten years of numbers. Staffing, compensation, checks, vendors, and finally the fund balance.

The receipts are here.

What they mean is for readers to decide.

With receipts and respect,

Lady B 👑
