🧾 YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK: HASLETT PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dearest reader,

A reader sent me roughly 13 months of purchasing-card records connected to Haslett Public Schools Superintendent Patrick Malley.

So, naturally, I opened the ledger. 👑

After sorting through the charges, here are four categories that caught my attention:

💻 Subscriptions & software: $6,214.75

🍽 Food & beverage: $2,395.59

🏨 Travel: $3,256.39

💻 MacBook Pro: $3,099.00 — charged to the district's sinking fund.

Total: $14,965.73

The subscription list includes OpenAI/ChatGPT, Superhuman, Asana, OmniPlan, Notion, Claude, Otter.ai, Dropbox, Grammarly and quite a few others.

The food and beverage charges range from coffee and meeting lunches to places including New Holland Brewing, HopCat, Prost Wine Bar & Charcuterie and Luna Grand Rapids.

And then there's that MacBook.

The district's purchasing-card record describes the $3,099 Apple purchase as:

"Sinking Fund - Malley MacBook Pro"

Technology can be an allowable sinking-fund expense. But I still think it's a fair question for taxpayers:

When voters approve a sinking fund, is a $3,099 MacBook Pro for the superintendent what they picture those tax dollars purchasing?

I'll leave that one with you.

Receipts aren't very useful if we only keep the convenient ones.

With receipts and respect,
