LADY BUDGETDOWN | WATERFORD SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dearest readers,

As I begin gathering financial records for Waterford School District, I've already come across a few breadcrumbs on the district's transparency page.

Michigan school districts are required to make certain financial information publicly available. These disclosures are intended to give taxpayers an opportunity to see how public education dollars are being spent.

So far, I've noticed two categories that appear to be considerably outdated:

📌 Association Dues
The most recent report posted is from the 2022–2023 school year.

📌 Out-of-State Travel
The most recent report posted is from the 2021–2022 school year.

We're now in the 2026–2027 school year.

That's three school years of more recent association dues reports and four school years of out-of-state travel reports that I haven't been able to locate on the district's transparency page.

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean the district hasn't maintained these records or incurred these expenses. It means the information doesn't appear to be publicly available where taxpayers should reasonably expect to find it.

And that raises a simple question.

If Michigan requires school districts to maintain public financial transparency, who is making sure those transparency pages are actually kept up to date?

I'm still gathering Waterford's financial records, so this is simply an early observation, not a completed review.

But transparency shouldn't require taxpayers to go hunting for information that is supposed to be readily available.

As always, with receipts and respect. 📚
