Dearest reader,

Yesterday, Step 1 showed us that Port Huron Area School District lost 2,235.39 pupils over the last decade — a decline of 24.47%.

Now Lady B has wandered over to the staffing ledger.

And Port Huron did reduce staffing.

From 2014-15 to 2024-25:

Teachers:
427.10 → 390.22
−8.63%

Instructional aides:
25.71 → 13.00
−49.44%

School support:
105.39 → 54.05
−48.71%

Other support:
271.83 → 159.99
−41.14%

Not everything declined.
Guidance:
13.60 → 15.63
+14.93%

Student support:
21.94 → 33.60
+53.14%

Then Lady B opened the NCES administrative ledger.

And this is where the picture gets interesting.

School administrators:
35.90 → 30.50
−15.04%

But district/central administrators moved the opposite direction:
16.50 → 20.90
+26.67%

Put the two together and total administrators remained almost flat:
52.40 → 51.40
−1.91%

Meanwhile, total staff across all positions fell:
1,107.07 → 894.69
−19.18%

So let's put the decade side by side.

Pupils: −24.47%

Total staff: −19.18%

Teachers: −8.63%

Total administrators: −1.91%

District/central administrators: +26.67%

There is important context here.

Port Huron did respond to declining enrollment by reducing its overall workforce. And teacher staffing declined considerably less than pupil count.

But those reductions were not distributed evenly.

While teachers, aides, school support, other support, school administrators, and total staff declined, the district/central administrative category grew by more than one-quarter.

That doesn't tell us whether those additional central administrative positions were necessary.

It does tell us where staffing priorities changed.

And that's why Lady B follows more than one number.

The total tells part of the story.

The categories tell the rest.

Next, we follow the compensation.

With receipts and respect.
