MATTAWAN CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL: A DECADE IN THE LEDGER

Mattawan is an interesting one, because unlike many of the districts I've reviewed, enrollment didn't decline.

From 2014-15 to 2024-25, pupil count increased from 3,469.35 to 3,730.96, up 7.5%.

And over that same decade, more money came into the district.

All-sources revenue per pupil increased 56.4%, compared with 35.83% inflation.

Total instruction per pupil increased 45.0%.

Instructional support per pupil increased 52.75%.

Business & administration per pupil increased 83.78%, more than twice the rate of inflation.

But then we get to the number that caught my attention.

Average teacher salary:

2014-15: $62,635
2024-25: $59,395

That's not an increase below inflation.

That's an actual decrease of $3,240, or 5.17% before inflation is even considered.

Meanwhile, operations & maintenance spending per pupil increased 27.92%, also trailing inflation.

So Mattawan gives us an interesting decade to examine:

More pupils.
More revenue per pupil.
More instructional spending per pupil.
Much more business & administration spending per pupil.

But a lower average teacher salary.

The numbers don't tell us why.

They tell us where to look next.

And that is exactly what Step 2 will do.

👑 With receipts and respect.
