Dearest reader,

Another breadcrumb from the Michigan Department of Education's State Aid Financial Status Reports.

This time, we're in Wayne County.

Section 163 allows the state to reduce a school district's state aid when a teacher or counselor does not meet the certification, authorization, or permit requirements for the position.

And in the August 2026 report, two traditional public school districts in Wayne County caught my attention:

Dearborn City School District — $24,370.79

River Rouge, School District of the City of — $13,813.96

MDE labels these as "NON-CERT TEACHER/COUNSELOR" deductions. Dearborn's appears as a 2024 adjustment, while River Rouge's appears as a 2025 deduction.

Now for the important part.

The State Aid Financial Status Report does not tell us who the employee was. It does not tell us the position involved. And it does not tell us precisely what was missing — certification, authorization, permit, or something else that resulted in the deduction.

So I'm not going to fill in those blanks myself.

These reports give us the numbers.

The numbers give us the breadcrumb.

And the breadcrumb tells us where to start looking.

With receipts and respect.
