Dearest Reader,

This author has always believed that a lecture on honesty carries more weight when the lecturer practices it themselves.

And so, when Hemlock Public Schools implored its constituents to "GET THE FACTS," this author did precisely that, only to discover the district's own facts wanting.

Their claim: voters are "required by law" to pass a millage.

The truth: Michigan's funding formula merely assumes the levy exists. Should voters decline it, the state sends no reinforcements. A shortfall, yes. A legal mandate upon the electorate, no.

One imagines the difference matters rather a great deal to the person casting the ballot.

This author takes no position on how any reader ought to vote. She takes considerable interest, however, in a district that demands precision from its critics while affording itself none.

Facts, it seems, are for the getting, not the giving.

Until next time,
