Dearest reader,

Step Five is where I stop looking at isolated numbers and ask a broader question:

How healthy does the financial picture actually look?

For Rudyard Area Schools, the answer is pretty encouraging.

From 2022 to 2024, the General Fund balance grew from about $1.48 million to $1.99 million, an increase of roughly 34.9%.

By 2024, the district's actual fund balance equaled 19.47% of expenditures and transfers, better than the 16.18% anticipated in the final budget.

Then there are the audits.

The 2024 financial statements received an unmodified opinion, in plain English, the auditors found the statements were presented fairly, in all material respects.

The auditors also reported no identified material weaknesses in financial-reporting internal controls and no reportable instances of noncompliance under Government Auditing Standards.

The federal side was clean too. Rudyard was found to have complied, in all material respects, with the requirements applicable to its major federal programs.

There was one budget exception worth noting.

The Student/School Activity Fund exceeded its final appropriation by $4,369.

I'm including that because the whole point of the ledger is to include the complete picture.

But context matters.

This was a relatively small, isolated variance inside an otherwise clean audit picture. It does not outweigh the broader financial story.

And that broader story is this:

Fund balance increased.
The audit opinion was clean.
No material weaknesses were identified.
No reportable compliance issues were found.

Even long-term debt moved in the right direction. Rudyard reported about $2.392 million in general-obligation bonds and other long-term debt outstanding in 2024, down by about $601,501 from the prior year, with an A- stable underlying bond rating.

Step Five is not about giving anyone a gold star.

It is about reading the receipts fairly.

And so far, Rudyard's receipts tell the story of a district that appears to be maintaining a healthy fund balance, reducing debt, and moving through its audits without the kinds of findings that usually make my red pen twitch.

That deserves to be said just as clearly as anything else.

With receipts & respect. 🪶
