You Can Help Support the Work

Lady Budgetdown

Dearest reader,

Lady Budgetdown started with a simple idea:

Take public information that is technically available to everyone, dig through it, organize it, explain it in plain English, and give people the receipts so they can check the work themselves.

The project has grown somewhat beyond that.

By "somewhat," I mean there are now hundreds of Michigan school districts, an alarming number of spreadsheets, public-record requests, source documents, graphics, databases, hosting expenses, research tools, and a Ledger large enough to require its own home on the internet.

Apparently the abacus was not going to be enough.

Why support The Ledger?

Lady Budgetdown is an independent, one-person project.

There is no organization funding the research. There is no school district paying for it. There is no political group choosing what gets investigated.

Supporting The Ledger helps pay for the infrastructure that makes the work possible: website and forum hosting, research tools, public-record costs, document storage, data processing, and the other decidedly unglamorous expenses involved in maintaining a growing public archive.

It also helps give me something increasingly valuable:

the ability to spend more time doing the research.

What supporters receive

The public research will remain public.

I don't want the basic receipts hidden behind a paywall. If Lady Budgetdown publishes a finding about a public school district, people should be able to see the evidence supporting it whether they financially support this project or not.

Supporters, however, can get a little deeper into the Ledger.

That may include opportunities to vote on districts coming up for review, behind-the-scenes looks at how an investigation develops, supporter-only discussions, access to additional source documents and FOIA responses, downloadable graphics and research files, district and county workbooks, and expanded opportunities to submit research requests.

Think of it less as buying access to the receipts and more as getting a seat closer to the desk where the receipts are being sorted.

What support does not buy

This part matters.

Supporting The Ledger does not purchase a favorable story.

It does not purchase an unfavorable one either.

A supporter cannot pay to have a district praised, targeted, ignored, or protected.

You cannot purchase a conclusion.

And if a supporter sends me a breadcrumb, it is held to the same standard as one sent by anyone else:

What do the records show?

Financial support helps make the research possible.

It does not determine what the research says.

Read the research.

Download the public receipts.

Ask questions.

Challenge something.

Send a document.

Tell me when your district did something right.

Point me toward something I may have missed.

Share a Ledger entry with someone who should see it.

All of those things support this project too.

If you do choose to financially support The Ledger, however, please know that I appreciate it tremendously.

You're helping an independent project continue doing something that has become considerably larger than I ever expected:

making public-school information easier for the public to actually use.

The receipts will remain public.

The questions will remain fair.

The corrections will remain visible.

And no matter who helps keep the lights on:

The facts still lead the ledger.

Thank you for helping keep the quill moving. 🪶
