🪶 Lady Budgetdown's Society Papers 🩷

Dearest Readers,

Lady Budgetdown has spent the last several days buried in years of Pontiac School District budgets, audits, amendments, and financial statements.

And the receipts tell two very different stories.

First...

👏 Pontiac deserves credit.

The district climbed out of what was once a $51 million General Fund deficit, eliminated millions in legacy debt, and no longer relies on the tax anticipation borrowing that once reached $15.5 million. That is no small accomplishment.

But...

The audits also reveal a second story.

📌 For TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS (FY2024 & FY2025), independent auditors reported the SAME TWO MATERIAL WEAKNESSES.

Not suggestions.

Not recommendations.

Material Weaknesses.

According to the auditors:

📒 Financial records required numerous material adjustments before the financial statements were accurate.

📊 Revenue, expenditures, receivables, payables, and other accounts required corrections.

⏳ The district was not adequately prepared for the audit, resulting in delays.

📑 The financial statements initially presented to the auditors contained material misstatements.

Then there was the budget.

In FY2024, auditors found the district's final budget:

💲 Overstated revenues by roughly $24 million.

💲 Failed to properly budget approximately $18.2 million related to debt forgiveness.

They classified it as both a Material Weakness and Material Noncompliance.

One year later...

The same finding returned.

FY2025's final budget differed from actual results by roughly:

📉 $10 million in revenues

📉 $18 million in expenditures

And the auditors again reported the finding as unresolved.

Now, to be fair...

Pontiac still finished FY2025 better than budgeted, and its federal grant compliance received clean opinions. Those are positive facts that deserve recognition.

But here's the question taxpayers should ask:

If independent auditors identify the same material weaknesses two years in a row, has the underlying problem truly been fixed?

Lady Budgetdown isn't interested in politics.

She isn't interested in personalities.

She is interested in one thing...

📜 The Receipts.

And these receipts tell both sides of the story.

Celebrate the progress.

But don't ignore the audit findings.

Because transparency means reporting all of the facts—not just the ones that fit a preferred narrative.

👑 The Society insists on receipts. The readers decide the verdict.
