Dearest reader,

DeWitt Public Schools is next under the Lady Budgetdown magnifying glass. 👀

Over the last decade, enrollment was remarkably steady, 3,066 pupils in 2014-15 compared with 3,108.88 in 2024-25. That's an increase of just 1.4%.

The financial side moved quite a bit more.

Per-pupil revenue increased 57.1%. Total instruction increased 49.9%. Instructional support increased 101.3%. Business & administration increased 60.7%. Operations & maintenance increased 61.9%.

And yes, inflation matters. Even after accounting for it, every one of those per-pupil categories shown here increased in real terms.

Then there are the teachers.

Average teacher salary went from $68,014 to $74,605, an increase of only 9.7% over the decade. After adjusting for inflation, that represents a 19.2% decline in purchasing power.

Nearly the same number of students. More revenue per pupil. More spending per pupil across each of these categories.

But teacher salaries did not keep pace with inflation.

That doesn't answer every question about DeWitt's finances.

But it certainly gives us a few breadcrumbs worth following. 👑

With receipts and respect.
