Dearest reader,

Apparently, we're talking about Fowlerville again.

Tonight, Fowlerville Community Schools responded in a parents' Facebook group with this clarification:

"It's important to clarify that 'Central Services' does not mean Central Office administration. Under Michigan Department of Education accounting rules, Central Services can include human resources, pupil accounting, communications, districtwide technology, software, networks, data systems, security-camera technology, technology support, and other systemwide services."

That clarification is fair.

But it could also be misleading.

Because nobody needs to take Lady Budgetdown's word for the number.

Fowlerville's own financial records report Central Services at $470,993 in 2023–24 actual expenditures.

The district then budgeted $677,571 for Central Services in 2025–26.

And the 2026–27 adopted budget puts it at $1,064,417.

That's the question.

Not whether every dollar classified as "Central Services" is the salary of someone sitting inside Central Office.

Not whether technology, HR, communications, data systems or other expenses can properly be classified there.

The question is:

What caused Central Services to go from $470,993 to $1,064,417?

That's an increase of $593,424.

126%.

Explaining what the accounting category can contain does not explain what Fowlerville actually spent, or plans to spend, that caused the category to more than double.

In fact, Michigan accounting guidance treats Central Services as its own districtwide support category, including functions such as personnel, communications and non-instructional technology.

So thank you for the clarification.

Now perhaps Fowlerville can answer the question.

What specifically accounts for the increase?

I don't have Fowlerville's detailed ledger.

They do.

With receipts and respect.
